Opportunity World Magazine interviews Daren Falter, author of How to Select a Home-Based Business . Daren has reviewed over 400 home business plans in the last 24 months. In this interview, Daren makes his recommendations on how to selecting the RIGHT home-business opportunity every time.

OWM: “Daren, to start off, explain to our readers what you do.”

Daren: “I'd love to. I have the BEST career in the world. I teach extremely ambitious people, like yourself, how to select the BEST home-business opportunity at the BEST possible time. OWM: “Can you give me an example of what you're talking about? In other words, how can someone benefit by taking the time to go through your process of selecting the best company at the best time?”

Daren: “I have a formula for picking top opportunities. Here's an example of a company I reviewed several years ago that matched this formula. This Utah based company was doing about $200-$300 million in annual sales when I placed them on my TOP FIVE OPPORTUNITIES LIST. Many people thought I was out to lunch. Today, that same company is doing about one billion dollars per year and still growing rapidly. This company has generated nearly 300 millionaires. Companies like Costco and GNC are now trying to knock off their product, but this company is already the dominant brand. Other companies can only hope to imitate and clean up a few left over scraps of business. This company went from zero to one billion dollars in annual sales faster than any company in the history of direct sales and turned the industry on its ear. I've proven that my formula works time after time.”

OWM: “Wow, Daren. That's impressive! I'd be interested in looking at your blueprint for success. Now, I've noticed all of your top recommendations are either direct sales/network marketing businesses or multi-tier internet affiliate programs. Care to comment?”

Daren: “I'd be happy to. When it comes to home-based business opportunities, I've compared and scrutinized everything under the sun over the last 14 years. Trust me when I say that there is absolutely nothing like Direct Sale/Network Marketing for creating the home-based lifestyle you want, whether you're building on or off-line. Some think of MLM as the old “pyramid schemes” of yester year. I'd challenge these people to reevaluate where the industry is today. Network marketing is swallowing up franchising, vending, consulting, mail-order, wholesaling, import/export, and everything else. If you're not convinced, go read some of the best selling financial authors and see what they're saying about network marketing in 2004-2005; Robert Kiyosaki, Paul Zane Pilzer, Denis Waitley, Marc Victor Hansen, Brian Tracy, Len Clements, Jim Rohn, Robert Allen, or Tony Robbins. But whatever you do, don't call me to argue about the legitimacy of MLM. I'm too busy working with people who already see the writing on the wall. Old school ‘linear income' opportunities are out. We're following the 21 st century business paradigm.”

OWM: “You talk a lot about timing in your trainings. So when is the best time to pick a winner?”

Daren: “I usually start recommending a top company after it hits $50-$500 million per year in sales and no sooner. Most start-up companies will go out of business in pre-launch or in their first year of business. On the flip side, I usually stop recommending my clients take caution in launching a distributorship with a multi-billion dollar company unless there's a unique angle or market they want to focus on. If I might join a more mature company if I were concentrating on expansion into new countries outside the US or new untapped markets within the US . The key is finding the next multi-billion dollar company before it's a multi-billion dollar company. Join and build your opportunity during the company's momentum phase, this is your window of mega-opportunity.”

OWM: “Why are you so focused on networking? Aren't there other opportunities that are as good or even better?”

Daren: “There are great opportunities everywhere in business today. Plus, everyone should have some real estate and other investments. But there's nothing like network marketing. It's the ultimate business start-up model; all of the perks and benefits of a franchising and vending with a small fraction of the start-up costs and risk. I'm starting to see very successful business people starting network marketing distributorships every day! As a matter of fact, I just invited my good friend Robby on one of my training calls last week. Robby became a millionaire in real estate before he was 30 years old. Today, he doesn't have to work if he doesn't want to. So what does he choose to do with his time? Network Marketing. Robby explains it best, ‘I love my mortgage business, my employees, and all of my properties, but network marketing provides the ultimate LEVERAGE! I see it as the real estate of the 21 st century. And to top it off, it's a whole lot more FUN than anything else I can think of to make this kind of money. I love to travel, meet and open new markets with like-minded people, and write it all off.' I agree whole heartedly with Robby's assessment of network marketing.”

OWM: “Explain more about this residual income.”

Daren: “Let me share with you an example from my own involvement with a home-based business that will illustrate the power of residual income. Ten years ago I selected one of my top five companies and actually built a large international sales organization in just 3 years. Although I have not worked this business actively in over six year, I still receive excellent weekly commission checks today from this distributorship and could potentially earn this income for the rest of my life.

OWM: “So how do you still get paid if you haven't lifted a finger in over six years?”

Daren: “Part of my strategy for picking the BEST company is to select a product or service that will provide me with long-term residual commissions. I always select a product line that is highly sought after by the baby boomer market and is also highly consumable. This is the magic ‘one-two punch'. Top economist have taught us how to leverage our businesses by targeting our products to the 76 million baby boomers and their 74 million babies. These masses control most of the buying power in north America and currently demanding products that deal with health and anti-aging. This market will continue to grow over the next several decades as the boomers mature. Therefore, I've chosen to focus most of my efforts on the health and wellness industry with nutritional supplements being my bread and butter. And, here's my ace-in-the-hole. While most home-business owners are looking for the next carpet to shampoo, the next pot & pan sell, or the next client to consult, I'm enjoying thousands of monthly repeat sales that I initiated months, or even many years before. People always ask me how much I earn on each of my customers. I tell them, ‘I don't know, I'm still being paid on them every week'. If you're not getting this kind of repeat income every month, you've leveraged yourself right out of your opportunity. This is not something to be taken lightly.”

OWM: “So having a consumable ‘baby boomer' product is critical. Are there other factors I should be looking at in selecting my home-based business?”

Daren: Thought you'd never ask. YES! We've already discussed the importance of proper timing, but you also need a solid compensation plan or commission plan, an experienced and committed management team with lots of money behind them and great attorneys, and you need a product that will knock the socks off the competition.

OWM: “Explain compensation plans. There are so many out there that claim to have the best payout, the best bonuses, etc. What do you look for in a plan?”

Daren: “I look for a plan that is fair to everyone, lucrative to those who want to make the millions, and synergistic which means the plan must have built-in incentives to encourage distributors to work together at teams to help everyone succeed. Many plans are missing these incentives today. My favorite plan for 2004-2005 is a Unilevel with a solid fast-start bonus, some kind of leadership bonus paid on all the company's volume, and dynamic compression. Most of my top 5 companies have these features.”

OWM: “What is the most important thing to look for in a great distributorship?”

Daren: “This is kind of a tricky question because I can answer two different ways. My first instinct is to say ALL of these criteria are important for success… product industry, timing, compensation, management, product, marketing systems, etc. But if I had to choose one criterion as the absolute most important factor in the long-term massive success of a company, it would have to be ‘management'. After all products do not formulate themselves and compensation plans don't design themselves. Your company's management team will make or break your opportunity. I'd hire a private investigator or direct sales/network marketing consultant to track down the facts on the executives making the decisions in your company before I'd make a commitment to total strangers. Your financial future is on the line here.”

OWM: “How does someone qualify for a live interview with you?”

Daren: “Anyone can request an interview, but I have very limited time so I have to be very selective. I'm looking for 3 things. First, you must be able to think REALLY BIG. So many people starting a home business are just looking for a little part-time income, maybe even a solid five or six figure income. You can do that by responding to just about any offer in your magazine. There are TONS of ideas out there. My system involved getting people to understand the power of ‘leverage' and ‘geometric growth'. If you can't imagine big numbers, or don't care about achieving MORE by working smarter, we don't have time to try reprogram your brain. Second, I'm looking for people who are willing to come to the interview with an open mind. I don't want to hear what you've decided to do until we have a conversation about how to pick the next winner. Ninety nine percent of my clients have already made bad home business choices in the past, mostly because they followed their emotions and not wisdom. If you've already picked your company, but you haven't read my book, you're probably making an inferior choice to the one I can help you make. Come with a clean slate, and I'll help you find the next HUGE success. And Third, we're looking for people who will make a 5 year commitment when convinced they're selecting the right business vehicle. Now experience helps, but its not necessary for massive success. I usually will have you talk with one of my partners first before our interview just to check your qualifications.”

OWM: “Daren, I've heard about your involvement with internet marketing training. Can people use the internet to build their home-based business?”

Daren: “Are you kidding me? I've been a student of internet marketing for the last 10 years. I left my last home business opportunity 6 years ago to spend full time effort learning the secrets of the internet marketing gurus. My plan was to learn everything I could over about a 5 year period of time and then bring those strategies and that knowledge back to the home-based business opportunity field. And here I am today! I'm teaching FREE tele-classes every week to home-business owners of every kind. Last week I had a call with at least 20 different opportunities, franchises, or distributorships represented. I'm teaching them how to build a list of 10,000 names in 10 months, how to get listed at the top of the search engines, how to get free publicity online, how to automate your website, and how to right web ad copy to convert visitors in to cash. OWM: “Daren, do you ever get involved with any of the business opportunities you review?”

Daren: Only two times in my entire career. The first was 10 years ago, and… I just did it again this year! Actually, you caught me just in time. I'm starting to decline consulting opportunities and even interviews and seminars to focus on building another MASSIVE home-based business. I LOVE this stuff. This one kind of fell into my lap and from my training, I immediately recognized what I had!

OWM: “How did you select your current opportunity? Did you use your system?”

Daren: “Of course. It's the only way to guarantee the best home-business choice. Here's the story. As you know, I'm constantly doing research to update my books and website on the top opportunities in home business. I'm also always seeking for more consulting business. Last year I came across a company called XanGo of Draper, Utah and I ended up traveling to the company headquarters for a routine interview with the executive management team to discover ways we could work together. I left the building hours later with a vision of the future of home-based business. This company is preparing to generate the largest number of first time millionaires of any one independent distributorship opportunity. They've found a “first to market” all natural nutritional product scientist are claiming will be many times more popular that Aloe Vera within the next 10 years. Timing on this product and company perfectly match my success model. As I've observed this company and its distributors over the last several months, I'm convinced that I have discovered the greatest home-based distributorship in the history of the industry.

OWM: That's a very strong statement. Now you're getting ME excited. What does this do to your consulting and writing career?

Daren: I'm now in a long-term holding pattern with my regular consulting and I'm spending most of my time seeking new business partners for XanGo. I've never in my lifetime seen anything with this kind of potential, so I'm not wasting any time.
